When is it celebrated
Murcia Day is commemorated every 9 June. The date remembers the approval, on 9 June 1982, of Organic Law 4/1982 of the Statute of Autonomy; It is fixed as an institutional anniversary, although its inclusion as a work break must be verified in the official calendar of each year.
Is it a holiday or a working day?
When the Autonomous Community incorporates it into its calendar, it is a public holiday in the whole of Murcia, not in all of Spain. The calendar published for 2026 includes Tuesday, 9 June, as Murcia Day; This condition should not be automatically extrapolated to subsequent years, because the list of regional holidays is approved each year.
Origin and geographical link
It is a celebration typical of the uniprovincial autonomous community of Murcia. Its founding reference is the Statute of Autonomy approved in 1982, a basic institutional norm that constituted the province as an autonomous community and defined its institutions, powers and resources.
Regular events
The programme has as its axis an institutional event chaired by the regional Government, with public interventions and the delivery of Gold Medals and Distinguished Service Diplomas. Around the date, educational and educational proposals are also promoted, such as drawing contests about places in the Region, and activities that highlight the identity, culture and achievements of Murcia.
Usual duration of events
The main ceremony takes place over one day, on 9 June, while educational calls, the granting of honours and other initiatives can be prepared or resolved over several weeks. There is no uniform duration for the entire programme and both the venue and the times are announced for each edition.
Traditions and history
The festival keeps alive the memory of access to self-government. The Cortes Generales approved the Statute on 9 June 1982, it was published in the BOE on 19 June and came into force on 9 July of that year; For this reason, the celebration remembers the date of approval, not the date of publication or validity. The annual presentation of the highest regional distinctions has been consolidated as its most visible institutional tradition.
Where is it celebrated
It is celebrated in the 45 municipalities of Murcia. The central event is not linked to a single venue: the Community has chosen different locations and spaces - for example, the Teatro Romea in Murcia in 2025 and La Unión in 2026 -, so the specific venue requires annual consultation.
Who participates
The Government of Murcia, representatives of the Regional Assembly and municipal authorities take part, along with distinguished people and entities. Citizens participate as recipients of the commemoration and, depending on the programme, educational centres, students, associations and representatives from cultural, scientific, sports, social and professional fields are incorporated.
