Semana Grande, Begoña and local festivals in Gijón

La Semana Grande de Gijón/Xixón culmina alrededor del 15 August, day of Our Lady of Begoña. In 2026 the official holiday period covers 7 August to 16, ten days. The Semana Grande concerts are scheduled from the 7th to the 15th on the Poniente esplanade, and the summer programme extends activities to the Paseo de Begoña, the Plaza Mayor, the Plaza del Instituto, the Plaza del Marqués, the San Lorenzo beach and other spaces in the city.

The Night of Fires, seen from the bay of San Lorenzo, and the Prima Dance are part of the most recognisable traditions of the festive closing. The programme also incorporates free music, orchestras, street art, folklore, children's and sports activities and the Asturias International Trade Fair. The organisation is the responsibility of the City Council and Divertia, with the participation of bands, folk groups, artists, associations, residents and visitors. The municipal celebration programme for 2026 gathers the agenda and its locations.

The Gijón festive calendar also includes the Antroxu, with the brass band parade and the burial of the sardine, and the Night of San Xuan on Poniente beach. These celebrations have their own dates and programmes; They do not extend the duration of the Big Week nor convert all its days into work breaks.

Los 2026 local public holidays for the entire council they are the 17 February, Carnival/Antroxu, and the 29 June, San Pedro. La resolution of the Official Gazette of the Principality of Asturias declares them paid and non-recoverable. 15 August belongs to the general calendar and is not one of those two local holidays.
