Local festivals in Getxo
Getxo does not concentrate its calendar in a single festival: Andra Mari, Algorta, Romo, Pinueta, Las Arenas and the Old Port retain their own celebrations. Festival committees, cuadrillas and associations organise the programmes with support from the Town Council and Getxo Kultura.
Usual celebration
The season runs from May to September through separate programmes that usually last between three days and one week. Open grounds and squares in Andra Mari, the streets of Romo and Pinueta, Algorta, Las Arenas and the Old Port host txosnas, concerts, parades, pilgrimages, Basque rural sports, dancing, food competitions and religious events. The Old Port festival is distinguished by its marmitako competition, vertical greasy-pole contest and team trials beside the sea.
Programme for 2026
Romo and Pinueta held their festival from 2 to 9 August, with concerts and activities in the Txosnagunea and neighbourhood streets. The Algorta Old Port programme ran from 12 to 15 August and included traditional Basque music, dancing, communal sardine meals, a marmitako competition, the vertical greasy pole and lifting trials around the harbour. These are two distinct editions, and their durations do not apply to the other districts.
Local public holidays in 2026
Bizkaia's official calendar establishes two non-working public holidays that apply in Getxo: Friday 31 July, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, throughout the historical territory, and Thursday 24 September, Las Mercedes, as Getxo's municipal holiday. The remaining days of the district festivals are not automatically public holidays.
Other events
San Isidro in Andra Mari ran from 14 to 17 May 2026 with a pilgrimage, music, family activities and local residents taking part. The San Lorenzo market occupies Plaza San Nicolás and Plaza Biotz Alai in Algorta in August, while Las Mercedes remains Las Arenas' festival reference in September.
