Local festivals of Leioa
Date and duration of the 2026 edition. The festivities of San Juan de Leioa were celebrated from 19 June to 24, six main days, preceded by activities from 12 June to 17. The municipal programme opened the festivities with the txupinazo and the proclamation by Mari Pepa and Arlote from the City Hall and closed them on San Juan night with the final fireworks.
Places and annual programme. The events were distributed around the City Hall, J. R. Aketxe Square, Lehendakari Agirre Square, Bidebarri Boulevard, the Elexalde txosnas area, Kultur Leioa and the Sakoneta and Kandelazubieta sports centres. There were concerts, barracks, children's events, ball, fishing, boxing and herri kirolak. The night of the 23rd brought together the San Juan show, the bonfire and pyromusical fireworks in Lehendakari Agirre and the akelarre in the txosnas.
Traditions and participation. The Antzinako Eguna, the Aurresku de la Anteiglesia, the parades of txistularis, the tests between groups and the popular food maintain the collective character. In 2026 they participated 114 cuadrillas, unas 2.800 personas, in the descent after the proclamation, and the lunch on 20 June brought together a forecast of 2,500 diners in Bidebarri. City Council, associations, clubs, groups and cultural groups organise many of the activities.
Local public holidays in 2026. The official calendar of Bizkaia declared non-working, paid and non-recoverable 31 July, San Ignacio de Loyola, for the entire historical territory, and the 24 June for Leioa. These two working days should not be confused with the full duration of San Juan Jaiak.
