Founding festivities, Carnival and culture
Las Founding Festivities They remember every June the birth of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, dated 24 June 1478. The date of the edition of 2026 was 12 June-26, for fifteen days. The programme locations included the Plaza de Santa Ana for the proclamation and concerts, Doramas Park for family activities, Vegueta for the historical walk and the Castillo de la Luz for the closing of the Municipal Symphonic Band.
Among the traditions, the Noche de San Juan on 23 June on Las Canteras beach, where thousands of people gather. The programme combined music, culture, history and sport: the patios and squares of Vegueta hosted micro-concerts by Canarian artists and a simultaneous chess event in Santa Ana brought together about 200 participants of all ages. The City Council, the Symphonic Band, cultural and sports entities, artists, neighbors and visitors participate. The Carnival, with murgas, troupes, galas and parades, constitutes the other great annual celebration of the city.
Los 2026 local public holidays, different from the duration of both programmes, were the 17 February, Carnival Tuesday, and the 24 June, San Juan and aniversario fundacional, according to the municipal work calendar and the order of the Canary Islands Government.
