Local festivals of Catoira
The Viking Romaría is the great celebration of Catoira: it takes place the first week of August and culminates with the landing on Sunday morning at the Torres de Oeste, next to the Ulla River. The cycle combines historical recreation, culture, music and gastronomy.
Usual tradition
The festival was born in 1960 at the initiative of the Ateneo do Ullán; The landing has been represented since 1968 and the Concello took over the organisation in 1989. The crews arrive on the longships Torres de Oeste and Frederikssund, while about 200 people dramatize the Viking attack and the resistance on land. For approximately a week, theater, concerts, a medieval market, parades, folklore performances, tasting of mussels and Ulla wine, competitions and festivals are held. The Torres de Oeste enclosure, the banks of the Ulla and the centre of Catoira concentrate the events, with the participation of the City Council, associations, actors, crews, musicians, artisans and neighbors.
2026 programme
The Concello published the complete programme of the Viking Romaría 2026 and organised the registration of the Viking Landing and the Vikinguinho Landing, the distribution of the crews among three boats and the sale of tickets for the Viking Xantar in the tent of the Torres de Oeste enclosure. These activities belong to the 2026 edition and are not presented as a permanent calendar.
Local public holidays in 2026
The Official Gazette of Galicia declares for Catoira Monday, 6 July and Monday, 3 August as local public holidays in 2026, non-working days, paid and non-recoverable. 3 August is linked to the Viking Romaría weekend, but the cultural programme of the first week of August lasts longer than that single working day.
