The best-known celebration of Águilas is its Carnaval, declared of International Tourist Interest. Its main day varies each year because it depends on the Lent calendar; in recent programmes it is between February and March and lasts for several days, with parades and events in the urban centre. As a stable patron saint's day, the Virgin of Sorrows is celebrated on Friday of Sorrows, in March or April.
The Carnival occupies the streets and squares of the city with desfiles, peñas, disfraces, música, concursos y ambiente popular. The Friday of Sorrows has as reference the Parroquia de San José, with serenade, mass, floral offering, procession and fireworks. The City Council, Federation of Peñas, carnival groups, brotherhoods, neighbors and visitors participate.
