Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary of Luarca

The festival of Our Lady of the Rosary expresses the seafaring identity of Luarca through the saleo, a procession through the Cantabrian Sea that turns devotion to the patron saint of sailors into a collective memory of those who died at sea.

Usual date and duration

The main day is 15 August. The Valdés City Council places recreational activities from the 13th, while the official tourism portal of Spain usually presents the interval from 13 August to 15. 15 August is a national public holiday for the Assumption, although this work calendar does not replace the holiday's own programming.

Venue

The celebration takes place in Luarca, capital of the Valdés council. Its characteristic spaces are the port, the dock and the Cantabrian Sea: the image is carried on a litter to the corresponding boat and leaves accompanied by other decorated boats.

An invocation linked to the people of the sea

The Virgin of the Rosary is presented by Turismo Asturias as the seafaring virgin of western Asturias. The Luarca fishermen's brotherhood itself bears the name of Our Lady of the Rosary, a link that explains the prominence of fishermen, boats and seafaring families in the celebration.

Local tradition also relates the dedication to the protection of John of Austria's fleet in the battle of Lepanto. It is a devotional story transmitted in the institutional tourist description, not a founding date of the festival.

The sale and the offering in the Cantabrian Sea

The central act is saleo. After a volley of rockets, the image sails in an decorated boat, accompanied by a flotilla of also decorated boats. During the outing, the Salve marinera is sung, sirens sound and bouquets and wreaths of flowers are thrown into the water in memory of deceased fishermen and sailors.

The tribute combines a religious procession with a community mourning of a sailor nature. Navigation and offering are the features that distinguish this festival within the Valdés festive calendar.

Habaneras, hoguera y actividades festivas

The habaneras are part of the musical landscape associated with the festival and the day before it preserves the tradition of the bonfire. During the festive days, recreational, sports, cultural, music and dance proposals are also held for children and adults. The specific events may vary each year and must be checked in the programme for each edition.

Organisation and participation

The Valdés City Council attributes the organisation of the celebrations to the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary. The seafaring community, the boat crews, residents of Luarca and visitors participate, with the port as a meeting point between religious events and popular celebrations.

Reconocimiento turístico

Our Lady of the Rosary of Luarca appears in the official list of the Principality of Asturias among the festivals with declaration of Interés Turístico Nacional, with a celebration date of 15 August. This recognition corresponds to the holiday and does not in itself convert the day into a local public holiday.
