Corpus Christi de Toledo

Corpus Christi transforms the historic centre of Toledo into a great ceremonial scene. The Custody of Arfe leaves the Primate Cathedral under a sky of awnings, between streets covered with aromatic plants, balconies with pastry chefs and a procession in which institutions, brotherhoods and numerous faithful participate.

Celebration date

The date is variable and depends on the liturgical calendar: it is celebrated on the Thursday following the solemnity of the Holy Trinity, sixty days after Easter Sunday. The Big Week brings together activities during the days before and after.

In Castile-La Mancha, Corpus Thursday may appear as a regional holiday when established in the work calendar of each year; This administrative condition must be verified in the corresponding official calendar.

Lugar y recorrido procesional

The religious centre is the Holy Primate Cathedral Church. The procession leaves through the Puerta Llana and runs through the processional route of the historic centre, around the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Hombre de Palo, Cuatro Calles, Zocodover, Alfileritos and other routes along the traditional route, before returning to the Cathedral. Origin and history

The official Tourism website of Castile-La Mancha documents the procession since 1418 and presents it as the first of its kind documented in Spain. Over the centuries, the celebration acquired a religious, urban and heritage dimension inseparable from the Toledo identity.

The centerpiece is the Monstrance of Enrique de Arfe, made between 1515 and 1523 for the Cathedral. Its Gothic temple houses the gold monastery and is transported in the solemn procession.

The eve and the decoration

  • Flowers, garlands, confectioners, lanterns and aromatic plants decorate streets, facades and balconies.

The procession and its participants

The procession begins after the solemn mass. Brotherhoods, brotherhoods, chapters, religious communities, first communion children, corporations and authorities participate, with the Custody as the centre.
