Holy Week in Bolaños de Calatrava combines liturgical and processional observances with the unmistakable presence of the Roman Company, known as the armaos. It belongs to the Ruta de la Pasión Calatrava, designated a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 2016.
Dates and settings
The main cycle runs from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. Events centre on the parish church of San Felipe y Santiago, Santa María church, the Cristo de la Columna and Calvario chapels, the guardapasos storehouse, Plaza de España and the streets connecting them.
Brotherhoods and armaos
Local confraternities organise services, image transfers and processions. The armaos march through the town in military-inspired uniforms and take leading roles in the search for Jesus, Recogida de Judas and formations known as the caracol, estrella and molino, collective displays that distinguish Holy Week in Bolaños.
