Celebration date

The patron saint's holiday is 23 September. The programming usually begins in the second half of the month and reaches its central days on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th: Eve, Santa Tecla Day and Mercè Day. The exact dates of the complementary activities depend on the annual programme.

23 September is a local public holiday in Tarragona when approved by the municipal calendar; For example, it is expressly listed as a local holiday in 2026. This labour declaration is renewed by official agreement and should not be confused with the antiquity of the tradition.

The Upper Part concentrates a good part of the traditional sequence. The Cathedral and the Pla de la Seu are scenes of the services, the relic and the entrance of the Seguici; Plaza de la Font hosts institutional events and human tower days; Plaça de les Cols is the starting point of the walking pillars. Medieval origin

The Tarragona cult of Santa Tecla is ancient, but the structure of the festival was outlined after the medieval restoration of the city. The arrival from the East of the relic of the saint's arm, on 17 May 1321, provoked a reception in which the political, religious, military and workers groups participated.

Las Ordinacions de Santa Tecla, promulgated in 1370 by Archbishop Pere Clasquerí at the request of the city's consuls, established a sequence still recognisable today: vespers and union dances on the 22nd; going to the service and procession of the relic on the 23rd. They also ordered the streets along the route to be decorated and cleaned.

Los castells

The castells occupy three main events: the day of the first Sunday of the festivities, the day of Santa Tecla on the 23rd and the day of Mercè on the 24th. In the latter, the four local groups raise four-story pillars that descend the stairs of the Cathedral and advance to the Town Hall, one of the most characteristic images of the festival.

Participación, gastronomía y música

The City Council coordinates the festival together with Seguici entities, human tower groups, associations, musicians, parishes, businesses and numerous volunteers. The celebration has a strong neighbourhood and participatory dimension. It also has its own gastronomic and musical symbols, including the spinet with caragolins and the pasodoble. Amparito Roca.

Reconocimientos

The Generalitat declared Santa Tecla a Traditional Festival of National Interest in 1996 and reclassified it as a Heritage Festival of National Interest in 2010. The State granted it the title of Festival of National Tourist Interest by resolution of 24 September 2002.
