San Juan Fair and Badajoz Carnival
Usual date and duration. The San Juan Fair is organised around the 24 June and usually lasts more than a week. The Caya fairgrounds concentrate booths, attractions and nighttime concerts, while the daytime fair and other events reach the old town, the Plaza de España and cultural spaces. Carnival, in February, is another different celebration with special roots.
2026 Programme. The San Juan Fair was held from 19 June to 28, ten days. The municipal agenda included the concert of the Orchestra of Extremadura on the 23rd, Gigantes y Cabezudos and the concert of the Municipal Band on the 24th, in addition to the activity at the fairgrounds and the daytime fair. The fireworks show, initially conditioned by the risk of fire, was finally scheduled for the 27th.
Traditions and participation. Booths, attractions, music, giants and big heads, a day fair and coexistence in Caya characterize San Juan. The City Council, bands and cultural groups, tape recorders, hospitality, families and visitors participate. The Carnival brings comparsas, murgas and parades, but its calendar should not be mixed with that of the June fair.
Local public holidays in 2026. The official calendar published by the Government of Extremadura establishes for Badajoz the Tuesday, 17 February and Wednesday, 24 June. The first coincides with Carnival Tuesday and the second with San Juan; They are two specific days, not the entire duration of both festivals.
