Festival of the Courtyards of Córdoba
During the Festival and Contest of the Cordoba Patios, owners and caretakers open to the public domestic spaces that they maintain throughout the year. Flower pots, flower beds, wells, fountains and popular architecture turn the visit into a collective celebration of the way of life born around the patio.
Celebration date
The contest is held each year for approximately two weeks of the first half of may, within the May Festival of Cordoba. The dates, admitted patios and schedules are approved for each edition, so they must be checked in the municipal information.

The Fiesta de los Patios is not in itself a public holiday. The official calendar of Córdoba establishes national, regional and local holidays separately.
Where is it celebrated
The patios are distributed throughout the historic centre and traditional neighbourhoods such as Alcázar Viejo-San Basilio, Santa Marina-San Agustín, San Lorenzo, San Pedro-Santiago, Regina-Realejo and the Jewish Quarter. The list and routes change according to the properties admitted in each call.
It is not a single enclosure: you enter private homes and community spaces, many of small dimensions. The visit requires respecting the queues, the capacity, the neighbourhood rest, the plants and the instructions of those who take care of each house.

La casa-patio cordobesa
The central patio responds to the adaptation of the house to the dry and hot climate of Córdoba. It facilitates light, ventilation, water and coexistence. There are single-family houses and old tenement houses, in which different homes share galleries, stairs, sinks, wells or fountains around the common space.
Vegetation does not function as simple temporary decoration. Geraniums, gitanillas, carnations, jasmines and other species are cared for throughout the year, arranged in pots and flowerbeds and interact with Chinese Cordoba pavements, balconies, railings and water elements.
Origin and history of the contest
The City Council documents a first contest in 1918, also linked to bars and balconies. In 1921, the Patios, Balconies and Shop Windows Competition was held with municipal prizes; After interruptions and irregular stages, the contest recovered stably in the 1940s.
Since 1956, the Patios Festival added classical music and flamenco in patios and monumental spaces. Over time, evaluation criteria were specified regarding architecture, authenticity, flowers, water and care, and subsidies were established to compensate for work and maintenance costs.
Concurso, modalidades y visita
The City Council calls the contest and publishes rules, admitted patios, routes and schedules. The current categories include ancient architecture, modern architecture, unique patios and conventual patios. The assessment distinguishes architectural conservation, plant conservation and the efforts of its caretakers.
During the contest, access to the patios in competition is usually free of charge within official hours. The parallel cultural programming includes flamenco, copla, dance, concerts, exhibitions, workshops and family activities in patios and squares.
Who preserves and shares the party
The protagonists are owners, families, neighbourhood communities and caregivers, who sustain a practice transmitted between generations. The City Council organises the contest with patio associations and citizen groups, while residents and visitors participate by walking the routes and sharing the spaces.
UNESCO inscribed the Festival of the Patios of Córdoba in 2012 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Recognition refers to the social practice of decorating and opening the patios, to coexistence and to the knowledge transmitted, not only to the buildings or their flowers.
