Holy Week in Ocaña

Holy Week in Ocaña brings together more than four centuries of brotherhood tradition amid historic squares, convents and churches. The order and silence of the processions, articulated religious figures and Good Friday re-enactments give the celebration a distinctive identity within the province of Toledo.

Celebration dates

It is held each year from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. Dates follow the liturgical calendar, and the brotherhood association and council publish a programme and processional map for each edition.

Places

Events are spread among Santa María church, San Juan church, San José convent, the Dominican friars' convent, the Dominican nuns' convent and other religious sites. Processions pass through the old streets and monumental quarter, with Plaza Mayor serving as a place of passage and encounter.

History and brotherhoods

The council documents more than four hundred years of continuity. Ten brotherhoods, some rooted in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, organise the processions and bring together about two thousand members. Each corporation preserves its own images, insignia, dress and ceremonial role.

Procesión de las Caídas

Good Friday morning includes one of the celebration's most distinctive episodes. The articulated figure of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, patron saint of Ocaña, depicts the falls on the way to Calvary. Other movable figures and the Hermandad de Armados take part, the latter recognisable by the historic half-armour associated with the Archicofradía.

Holy Week in Ocaña is a Festival of National Tourist Interest. The brotherhoods prepare worship and processions, their association coordinates the shared calendar, and the council supports promotion, traffic arrangements, safety and visitor services.
