Amposta Festes Majors

The Festes Majors are Amposta's major August celebration. For several days, the city brings together tradition, music, popular culture, family activities, sport and participation by associations and representatives of local organisations.

Date and setting

They are usually held around 15 August, the day of the Mare de Déu de l'Assumpció. The calendar commonly extends over roughly ten days across Amposta's squares, streets, cultural venues, sports areas and festival sites.

Opening and local representatives

The traditional distribution of panoli and the opening signal announce the festivities. The institutional opening includes the presentation of representatives from local organisations and the opening address, followed in different editions by music, dancing and fireworks.

Traditions

  • Events honouring the Mare de Déu de l'Assumpció and an offering of flowers and fruit.
  • Sardana, jota and punxonet dancing, parades and popular culture.
  • The Concert Popular de Bandes by La Lira Ampostina and La Unió Filharmònica.
  • Giants and big-head figures, correfoc and children's activities.
  • Concurs Nacional de Vestits de Paper, tributes and the opening waltz.
  • Concerts, orchestras, dances, and youth and sports activities.

Bull-related events

Council programmes traditionally include bous al carrer and events in the ring, bull runs, bous capllaçats and embolats, and gatherings of bull-running clubs. Routes, times and safety conditions vary each year and must be checked in the official programme.

Organisation and participation

The council works with the festival and bull-event committees, security services, Civil Protection and many cultural, sporting, musical and traditional organisations. This collaboration supports a broad programme for all ages.
