Festivals in San Antón de Jaén
The San Antón festivities illuminate Jaén with neighbourhood lights and torches as a night race passes that transforms the streets into a meeting of fire, sport, music and coexistence. The celebration preserves customs linked to the rural world and the olive grove cycle.
Celebration date
The traditional reference is the 17 January, festival of San Antonio Abad. In the capital, the fires and the San Antón Night International Urban Race are usually scheduled on the weekend closest to that date, accompanied by cultural and tourist activities on the surrounding days.
San Antón is not in itself a general public holiday in Jaén: the work calendar is approved each year and must be consulted separately.

Fires through the neighbourhoods of Jaén
Fire is the centre of the night. Neighbourhood associations, parishes, brotherhoods and other groups prepare bonfires in squares, lots and authorized streets in different neighbourhoods. In the past they were fed with pruning remains from the olive grove and unused esparto grass baskets; Neighbors and visitors gather around them today.

Origin and history
The City Council places the origins of the Jaén festival in the 13th century, during the reign of Fernando III, as a religious celebration related to the countryside, livestock and the protection of animals. Popular tradition also attributed to fire a function of renewal and defence against diseases and pests.
The urban race was born in 1984 and has grown to become an international event with great participation. Its night tour, accompanied by the public with torches, was linked to the festive landscape of the fires.

The Jaén City Council coordinates the programming and the race through its Culture and Sports Boards. Reconocimiento turístico
The San Antón Festivities and the International Urban Race Night of San Antón were declared Festival of National Tourist Interest in 2019, a recognition that encompasses the unique union of traditional lights and sporting events.
