Festivals in San Lorenzo de Huesca

Huesca celebrates its major festivals in honour of San Lorenzo with a week in which white and green, basil, brass bands and peñas transform the city. Religious events and the Danzantes coexist with parades, giants and bigheads, festivals, family shows, concerts and an intense street life.

Celebration dates

The holidays are celebrated from 9 August to 15. The announcer rocket officially opens the programme at noon on the 9th; 10 August is the patron saint's holiday, and on the 15th the offering of flowers and fruits and farewell to the saint close the cycle. 10 August is usually a local holiday in Huesca, but it must be checked in the work calendar each year.

Calles y espacios laurentinos

The Cathedral Square hosts the proclamation and the rocket; The basilica and the Plaza de San Lorenzo concentrate the events dedicated to the patron saint. Plaza de Navarre, Plaza Luis López Allué, Parque Miguel Servet, Plaza General Alsina, the Palacio de Congresos and the streets of the centre form other common settings. The procession runs through the town centre from the basilica.

Origin and history

Huesca tradition identifies San Lorenzo, deacon and martyr of the 3rd century, as the son of the city. The devotion and celebrations around 10 August have been documented for centuries. The contemporary structure of the festivals preserves religious ceremonies and ancient dances, while incorporating a popular programme organised by the City Council, the clubs and numerous entities.

Danzantes, albahaca y colores

The Dancers of Huesca star in one of the essential moments on the morning of the 10th, accompanied by the Music Band. Their dances with sticks, swords and ribbons constitute a hallmark transmitted between generations. Basil perfumes the streets and squares, while the white clothing with green scarf and sash identifies the Laurentian atmosphere.

Organisation and recognition

The Huesca City Council coordinates the programme with the parish and the Royal Brotherhood of San Lorenzo, the Peñas Recreativas Oscenses, folklore associations, Music Band, Dancers, neighbourhood and cultural groups. The holidays were declared Festival of National Tourist Interest en 2005.
