The San Cayetano festivities open the cycle of August festivals in the Centro district of Madrid. Its atmosphere combines the religious celebration of the saint with music, dance, neighbourhood decoration and popular activities in the streets near Cascorro and Embajadores.

Saint Cajetan's day is 7 August. The festival usually develops for several days around that date. The calendar, schedules and specific scenarios must be checked each year in the Madrid City Council programme.

San Cajetan is not usually a general public holiday in Madrid: its importance is mainly religious, neighbourhood and cultural.
Venue
The celebration is concentrated around the church of San Cayetano, on Embajadores street, and extends through Cascorro, General Vara de Rey square, Ribera de Curtidores and other streets of Embajadores and Rastro. Calle del Oso is known for the involvement of its neighbors and for the decoration of facades and balconies.

Origin and meaning
The festival honours Saint Cayetano of Thiene, traditionally invoked in Madrid as a protector related to bread and work. The presence of the church dedicated to the saint on Embajadores Street turned this sector of popular old Madrid into the nucleus of the festival.
