Festivals in San Lorenzo en Madrid
The festivities of San Lorenzo take over from San Cayetano in the traditional August calendar. Lavapiés becomes the centre of a festival in which Madrid tradition, the cultural diversity of the neighbourhood and a popular programme open to residents and visitors coexist.

The festival of San Lorenzo is celebrated on 10 August. The activities usually take up several days close to that date, but the programme and authorized spaces may change each year.

This is not usually a general public holiday in Madrid. Its roots come from the religious and neighbourhood history of Lavapiés.
Venue
The traditional nucleus is located around the church of San Lorenzo and the Plaza de Lavapiés. The festival usually extends through Argumosa street, Arturo Barea square, Corrala square and other nearby streets and squares. The exact boundaries of the enclosure vary depending on the edition.

Origin and history
The festival is organised around the devotion to San Lorenzo and the church that bears his name in Lavapiés. Over time, the religious celebration was integrated into the popular life of the neighbourhood and became part of the succession of traditional festivals in the Central district.

The August festivals in Madrid
San Lorenzo occupies the centre of the cycle: it happens to the Festivals in San Cayetano and gives way to the Festivals in the Virgen de la Paloma. The proximity of the neighbourhoods allows the festive atmosphere to spread through the Downtown district during the first half of August.
