Holy Week in Alzira
Holy Week in Alzira combines a centuries-old brotherhood tradition, major processions and its own form of ephemeral art: the doseles, domestic displays built around the processional images. The celebration is designated a Festival of National Tourist Interest.
Dates and locations
It takes place each year from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, with preparatory events in the preceding weeks. Processions cross central Alzira, while the doseles occupy premises and homes around the town.
A tradition documented since the 16th century
The Municipal Archive records brotherhood-led observances from 1539, associated with the CofradÃa de la PreciosÃsima Sangre de Jesucristo or de la Soledad. The Town Council now reports more than 7,000 participants in 18 brotherhoods and confraternities, with 25 processional tableaux.
Doseles and characteristic events
The doseles, whose antecedents reach back to the 17th century, temporarily turn private spaces into theatrical displays open to visitors. Other distinctive events include the proclamation, Nit de les Miradetes, transfers, Stations of the Cross and the official visit to the displays.

Participation and recognition
Brotherhood members, clavarios, parishes, musicians, craftspeople and families sustain a celebration that fills both streets and display spaces. National Tourist Interest status was granted in 1988, recognising a Holy Week in which devotion, processional heritage and the doseles form an inseparable whole.
